Halloween Party!
"A Nightmare on Grand St."
 Friday, Oct. 28th, 2005
(7-10pm?)

31GRAND is pleased to host a Halloween party featuring the project “A Nightmare on Grand St.” organized by Jon Elliott.

25+ jack o’lanterns made from the scooped out shells of obsolete computer monitors and televisions will be piled in front of 31GRAND and the surrounding sidewalks. Each jack o’lantern face is created or designed by a different artist.

The Transformation:

The jack o’lantern is an ancient pagan invention. Villagers, fearful of the possibility of being visited by the ghosts of past occupants began to paint faces on turnips, or hollow them out and place lighted candles inside, hoping the representation of a dammed soul would ward the spirits away. Irish families who immigrated to America brought the tradition with them, but they replaced the turnips with pumpkins, which, native to the New World, were plentiful. Old and obsolete computer monitors and televisions have become more plentiful and common than pumpkins, thus completing the transformation.

Participating artists include: Maureen Cavanaugh, Mike Cockrill, David Humphrey, Nathan Ritterpusch, Jon Elliott, Jason Clay Lewis, Patryce Bak, Barnaby Whitfield, Adam Eckstrom, Ted Kersten, Jeph Gurecka, Carol Riot Kane, Jeff Wyckoff, Leandro Flaherty, Victoria Neel, Erick Munari, Denise DeLong, John Merritt, Colleen Becker, Adam Taye, Megan Maguire, Giacomo Mirabella, LiYu Tsai, Greg Hopkins, and Debora Gilbert-Ryan.
